About History of Neos

History of Neos’ Artificial Breeding

In 2002, Qiwen  Huang(黃琪文) cultivated Flame Shrimp Neos Fire Shrimp Neocaridina davidi var. red from original Neocaridina shrimp in Taiwan, and then improved it into rose shrimp through Jitai  Li (李濟台), and further developed a new  extremely red” Painted Shrimp”,” Ultra Shrimp” , and after gradually selecting and cultivating Neos Shrimp into various colors. Neos has quickly become a dominant player in the world's aquarium hobby, especially among aquatic plant aquarium enthusiasts, replacing the previous use of small genus fish in aquascaping.

Easy to Raise

They like clean water, pH 6.5-8, water temperature range 14-29 degrees Celsius, the optimal water temperature is 22 degrees Celsius.

Since the range of temperature and water quality parameters (TDS, PH) is wider than that of crystal shrimps (Caridinas), and the characteristics of large-scale breeding can be stocked in outdoor ponds, the scale of the breeding farm is amazing.

Colorful

In addition to the red color series that was initially developed, different color systems such as blue, yellow, orange, black colors, Rilis, and brown chocolate colors were continuously developed, and even the green color series that is currently widely loved in the market.

Low Market Price

Due to the incredible amount of fish farmed in fish farms around the world and the huge supply, prices are very affordable.

Diverse Varieties

Various Rili strains and the development of yellow gold sand, bronze, various colors to the extreme, and gold back stripes.

Future Breeding Trends

New special colors such as purple ,and various colored Rilis and "White Matter" stripes continue to development of future new strains.New strains are first developed for individual colors in the full-color group, and then Rili spots are developed from the single-color group, or new patterns such as golden-sand,gold-back and Boas are bred using the distribution of  "White Matter"

The Difference with Crystal Shrimp

As ornamental shrimps with similar body shapes and sizes, it is really difficult to tell them apart from their appearance. There are two main differences that are easier to distinguish.

  1. There are subtle differences in bristles at the ends of the forelimbs.
  2. Neos males have enlarged mating limbs, thus causing reproductive isolation between the two species.

There are three important points that need to be paid attention to when raising

Mixed Raising Problem

  1. Not suitable for mixed raising with fish, baby shrimp would easily be eaten.
  2. Polyculture of different strains can easily cause the characteristics of the offspring to degenerate into the reversion of native shrimps.

"Turn Water" to adapt to tank water quality issues

Since large-scale breeding farms usually use concrete tanks or earthen tanks for breeding, they are prone to die after entering the aquarium due to unsuitable water quality in the aquarium environment.

Fungal Problem

Most infected shrimps with fine green oocysts and red color strains are particularly susceptible to infection. This is also because of common problems in outdoor breeding. Removing infected shrimp is the best strategy.
